Cards from Science Photo Library
H1 particle detector
H1 particle detector. Technician working on the H1 detector of the HERA accelerator at DESY (Deutsche Elektronen Synchrotron). HERA (Hadron Electron Accelerator Ring) consists of a pair of accelerator rings mounted in a 6.3km circumference tunnel. The H1 detector is placed at one crossing point of the rings. In the centre of the detector, protons from one ring will collide with electrons from the other ring at a combined energy of 850 GeV. It is hoped that data from this detector will provide more information about the quarks in protons and the gluon force moderators that bind them together. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a technician diligently working on the H1 particle detector at the renowned HERA accelerator in DESY, Germany. The HERA (Hadron Electron Accelerator Ring) is an impressive scientific facility consisting of two accelerator rings mounted in a 6.3km circumference tunnel. The H1 detector, situated at one crossing point of the rings, plays a crucial role in advancing our understanding of particle physics. At its core, protons from one ring collide with electrons from the other ring, generating an astounding combined energy of 850 GeV. Scientists and researchers hope that data collected by this cutting-edge detector will shed light on quarks within protons and their binding force moderators known as gluons. By unraveling these fundamental building blocks of matter, we can gain deeper insights into the intricate workings of our universe. Photographed near Hamburg in May 1999, this image showcases both the dedication and expertise required to push boundaries in nuclear research. It serves as a testament to German innovation and scientific excellence embodied by DESY (Deutsche Elektronen Synchrotron), which has been at the forefront of groundbreaking discoveries for decades. This remarkable print from Science Photo Library encapsulates not only the fascinating world of particle physics but also highlights humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel nature's mysteries for the betterment of society.
