Fireworm bristles, SEM

Fireworm bristles. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fireworms bristles (setae). Fireworms (family Amphinomidae) are polychaete (meaning many-bristled) worms. They are also named bristleworms, and are usually found in the sea. The setae are found at the end of the protrusions (parapodia) that line the body of the worm. The parapodia are used as paddles to swim in water, and also act as the worms gills. The setae are made of the hard substance chitin, which also makes up the exoskeleton of insects. It is these setae that can penetrate human skin when touched, causing intense irritation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of fireworm bristles, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Fireworms, also known as bristleworms, belong to the polychaete family Amphinomidae and are commonly found in marine environments. The image reveals the setae, or bristles, located at the end of protrusions called parapodia that line the worm's body. These parapodia serve multiple functions - they act as paddles for swimming and function as gills. The setae themselves are composed of chitin, a tough substance also found in insect exoskeletons. Interestingly, these tiny structures possess an ability to penetrate human skin upon contact, causing intense irritation. This characteristic adds to their intriguing nature. The false-colored SEM image provides a magnified view of these microscopic subjects with stunning detail. Each individual bristle appears like a delicate spine or hook when observed up close. The vibrant colors used in this image enhance its visual appeal while highlighting different anatomical features. This photograph is not only visually striking but also serves as a reminder of the diverse fauna present within our oceans. It offers insight into the fascinating world of invertebrates and their unique adaptations for survival in aquatic environments.
