EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured copperplate engraving captures the iconic image of Queen Elizabeth I of England delivering her famous speech at Tilbury on August 8, 1588. The Spanish Armada, a formidable fleet of Spanish galleons, was approaching English shores with the intention of invading England and overthrowing the Protestant Queen. Facing her troops at Tilbury, near Gravesend in Kent, Elizabeth I donned a suit of armour, a white cuirass adorned with the Tudor rose, and addressed her soldiers with unwavering determination. In this illustration by Verico from Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1847, Elizabeth I is depicted wearing an elaborate headdress adorned with feathers and a plume, symbolizing her status as a monarch. She holds a lance in her right hand, while her left hand rests on the hilt of her sword. The Queen's standard, bearing the Tudor emblem, is held aloft by a soldier behind her. The engraving also shows the English flag, the Union Jack, flying proudly in the background. Elizabeth I's speech at Tilbury is a testament to her courage and leadership during a critical moment in English history. Her inspiring words rallied her troops and boosted their morale, ultimately contributing to the defeat of the Spanish Armada and securing England's independence. This powerful image encapsulates the spirit of the Elizabethan era and the indomitable will of its monarch.
