Dominique Joseph Garat: A Prominent Figure in French Basque Literature and Politics This handcoloured lithograph depicts Dominique Joseph Garat (1749-1833), a renowned French Basque writer and politician. Garat was born in the historic Basque region, straddling modern-day France and Spain, and made significant contributions to both literature and politics during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Garat's literary career began in earnest in the 1780s, with the publication of his first works, including "Les Basques" and "Histoire de la ville de Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port." These works showcased his deep connection to Basque culture and history, and helped to solidify his reputation as a leading figure in Basque literature. In addition to his literary pursuits, Garat was also an active politician. He served as a deputy to the Estates-General in 1789, where he advocated for the rights of the Basque people and worked to promote their cultural heritage. Garat's political activism continued throughout his life, and he was a vocal supporter of the French Revolution and the establishment of the First French Republic. This lithograph, taken from "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852, captures Garat in the prime of his life.
