This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two distinctive bird species native to Africa: the White-crested Helmetshrike (Prionops plumatus) and the Dusky Woodswallow (Artamus cyanopterus). The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Naturalisie: Ornithologie" by Dumont de Sainte-Croix, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The artwork was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The White-crested Helmetshrike is identified by its distinctive white crest, black and white plumage, and long, curved beak. This bird is native to Central and West Africa, and is known for its omnivorous diet and social behavior. The Dusky Woodswallow, on the other hand, is characterized by its dusky brown plumage, long, pointed wings, and distinctive forked tail. This bird is found in open woodlands and savannas across sub-Saharan Africa. It is an insectivorous species that feeds on a variety of insects, which it catches in flight. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving showcase the beauty and diversity of African avian life during the early 19th century.
