Glass Frame : Virus particles, artwork
Mounted Prints from Science Photo Library
Virus particles, artwork
Virus particles, computer artwork. The spikes (red-tipped) on the virus particles are surface proteins that help them to attach to cell membranes. Once attached, the virus particles release genetic material into the cell (not seen). This travels to the cell nucleus where it combines with the cells genetic material. The cell then reads the genetic instructions and the cells biochemical mechanisms build new virus particles. These new virus particles erupt from the cell, killing it. The viral infection spreads as the cycle repeats

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing computer artwork of virus particles, shedding light on the intricate world of biology and medicine. The striking red-tipped spikes adorning these viral entities are surface proteins that play a crucial role in their attachment to cell membranes. Once attached, these cunning particles unleash their genetic material into the unsuspecting cell, an unseen process depicted here. The genetic material then embarks on a journey towards the cell nucleus, where it merges with the host's own genetic blueprint. In response to this invasion, the infected cell dutifully follows the viral instructions encoded within its newly acquired genes. Its biochemical machinery diligently constructs new virus particles from scratch. As if emerging from a dormant volcano, these freshly formed viruses burst forth from their host cells with lethal force. Tragically, this eruption marks the demise of the once-vibrant cell as it succumbs to its fatal fate. With each infected cell meeting its untimely end and releasing countless offspring into its surroundings, this relentless cycle perpetuates itself relentlessly. The insidious spread of infection continues unabated as more cells fall victim to this microscopic onslaught. Intriguingly illustrated through spiky artistry and vivid colors, this thought-provoking image serves as a reminder of both our vulnerability and resilience in facing pathogenic threats. It encapsulates key concepts in virology while showcasing Science Photo Library's dedication to capturing scientific wonders without commercial intent or mention thereof.
