Time-lapse image of a solar eclipse

Annular solar eclipse. Time lapse image of an annular solar eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Suns light. An annular eclipse is when the Earth is relatively close to the Sun (near perihelion) & the Moon is relatively far from the Earth (near apogee). The disc of the Moon then appears smaller than that of the Sun, so a ring (or annulus) of the Suns surface remains visible. When the Earth is further from the Sun and closer to the moon, the same alignment will result in a total solar eclipse. Photographed on 10 May 1994 over Toledo in Ohio, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of a time-lapse annular solar eclipse. As the moon gracefully glides between the Earth and the Sun, it creates a celestial spectacle that leaves us in awe. The phenomenon occurs when our planet is at its closest to the Sun (perihelion) while the Moon is at its farthest from Earth (apogee). This unique alignment causes the Moon's silhouette to appear smaller than that of our radiant star, resulting in a magnificent ring-shaped glow known as an annulus. Photographed on 10 May 1994 above Toledo in Ohio, USA, this image showcases nature's grandeur against an enchanting backdrop. The darkened disc of the Moon delicately encircles a vibrant halo of sunlight, casting an ethereal glow upon everything below. It serves as a reminder of our place within this vast universe and highlights humanity's fascination with cosmic events. The field of astronomy unravels countless mysteries hidden within these celestial phenomena. Through scientific exploration and observation, we gain deeper insights into our solar system's intricate workings. This photograph not only captures an extraordinary moment but also symbolizes mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our cosmos. Displayed by Science Photo Library, this print invites us to marvel at both artistry and science intertwined—a testament to human curiosity and wonderment for centuries past and those yet to come.
