Joseph Banks, English naturalist

Joseph Banks (1743-1820), English naturalist and botanist. Banks is seated at a desk with papers and a globe. To his right is an open window with an ocean view. Banks took part in Captain James Cooks first great voyage (1768-1771). The Latin quote by his hand states cras ingens iterabimus aequor (tomorrow we shall set out upon the vast ocean). He was elected president of the Royal Society in 1778, holding the post for 48 years, and made a baronet in 1781. This is a 1774 mezzotint engraving by English artist William Dickinson (1746-1823) of the 1773 artwork by the English portrait painter Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Joseph Banks, an esteemed English naturalist and botanist from the 18th century. In this portrait, Banks is depicted seated at a desk adorned with papers and a globe, surrounded by the tools of his trade. To his right, an open window reveals a breathtaking view of the vast ocean, symbolizing his adventurous spirit. Banks gained recognition for his participation in Captain James Cook's groundbreaking first voyage from 1768 to 1771. A Latin quote by Banks' hand reads "cras ingens iterabimus aequor" which translates to "tomorrow we shall set out upon the vast ocean" reflecting his unwavering dedication to exploration. Notably, Banks served as president of the Royal Society for an impressive 48 years and was honored with a baronet title in 1781. This particular mezzotint engraving by William Dickinson beautifully captures Sir Joshua Reynolds' original artwork from 1773. The image portrays Banks as a distinguished figure immersed in botanical studies and scientific pursuits. His contribution to natural history and botany remains invaluable even today. With its sepia tones and meticulous detail, this historical portrait offers us a glimpse into the life of one of Britain's most influential scientists during the Age of Enlightenment.
