Alcohol molecules

Alcohol molecules. Molecular models of four types of alcohol molecule. They are, clockwise from top left: methanol, ethanol, propan-2-ol and propan- 1-ol. Each molecule has a different number or placement of methyl (CH3) groups. Carbon atoms are black, hydrogen atoms are white and oxygen atoms are red. Methanol is poisonous and causes blindness if ingested. It is used in chemical manufacture. Ethanol is found in alcoholic drinks, and is used as a fuel. Ethanol, propan-1- ol and propan-2-ol are used as solvents in industry and in the manufacture of other chemicals

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate molecular structures of four different types of alcohol molecules. From top left, we have methanol, ethanol, propan-2-ol, and propan-1-ol. The distinct placement and number of methyl (CH3) groups differentiate these compounds. Carbon atoms are depicted in black, hydrogen atoms in white, and oxygen atoms in red. While each molecule serves various purposes within the realm of chemistry and industry, it is essential to understand their potential effects on human health. Methanol stands out as a poisonous substance that can cause blindness if ingested. However, it plays a crucial role in chemical manufacturing processes. Ethanol holds familiarity for many as it is found abundantly in alcoholic beverages but also serves as a fuel source. Its versatile nature makes it valuable both recreationally and industrially. Both propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol find extensive use as solvents across multiple industries while contributing to the production of other chemicals. The ball-and-stick model beautifully represents the bonds between these organic compounds—highlighting their structural complexity at an atomic level. This stunning print from Science Photo Library offers a glimpse into the world of alcohols' molecular intricacies—a testament to the fascinating field of chemistry where compounds like ethanol or methanol play vital roles beyond their commercial applications.
