The Battle of Ancrum Moor, 27 February 1545

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a significant moment in history. This battle took place during the War of the Rough Wooing, when King Henry VIII sought to arrange a marriage between his son Edward and Mary, Queen of Scots. However, after facing rejection from the Scottish Parliament, he declared war against Scotland. The Scottish victory at Ancrum Moor marked a temporary halt to English aggression in the Scottish border and lowlands. According to local legend, it was Maid Lilliard, a courageous Scottish woman warrior, who played a pivotal role in defeating the English forces. She fearlessly fought on the front lines and even killed an English Commander in armed combat. This image comes from "British Battles on Land and Sea" written by James Grant in 1880. It showcases the bravery and resilience displayed by women like Maid Lilliard during times of conflict. The monochrome composition adds depth to this historic scene as troops engage in fierce combat with raised arms and weapons drawn. As we admire this print today, we are reminded of the valor exhibited by those who fought for their country centuries ago. It serves as a testament to both the strength of character possessed by individuals like Maid Lilliard and their contribution to shaping British history.
