Tevatron accelerator, Fermilab

Main Ring and Tevatron particle accelerators. View along the 6.3km long circular tunnel housing the Main Ring and Tevatron proton-antiproton accelera- tors. They are at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago, USA. The Main Ring, consisting of 1000 red and blue conventional magnets, sits on the Tevatron ring of 1000 super- conducting magnets (one partially seen below the red magnet). The Main Ring accelerates protons and antiprotons to 150 billion electronvolts (150 GeV), before feeding them into the Tevatron ring, where they are accelerated to one trillion eV (1 TeV). The particles are then smashed into targets or collided with each other. Photographed in 1998

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive Tevatron accelerator at Fermilab, located near Chicago, USA. The image captures a view along the 6.3km long circular tunnel that houses both the Main Ring and Tevatron proton-antiproton accelerators. The Main Ring, composed of 1000 red and blue conventional magnets, is positioned on top of the Tevatron ring which consists of 1000 superconducting magnets. The Main Ring plays a crucial role in accelerating protons and antiprotons to an astounding energy level of 150 billion electronvolts (150 GeV). These particles are then fed into the Tevatron ring where they undergo further acceleration to reach an astonishing one trillion electronvolts (1 TeV). Once achieving these remarkable energies, the particles are either directed towards targets or collided with each other for scientific research purposes. Taken in 1998, this photograph beautifully captures the intricate design and immense power behind this particle physics laboratory. It highlights not only the advanced technology utilized within but also represents humanity's relentless pursuit of understanding our universe at its most fundamental level. This extraordinary image is part of Science Photo Library's collection titled "Odyssey" which encompasses various aspects related to magnetism, nuclear research, particle physics laboratories like Fermilab, and particle accelerators such as the renowned Tevatron accelerator.
