Picus Occipitalis. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

This print showcases "Picus Occipitalis" a stunning bird species found in the Himalaya Mountains. Engraved in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, this artwork represents their remarkable collaboration. John Gould, known as the bird-stuffer at the Zoological Society, developed a deep fascination with birds from the east during the late 1820s. This passion was ignited when a collection of avian specimens from the Himalayas arrived at the society's museum. Inspired by these exotic creatures, John conceived an ambitious project: to publish a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty different species and one hundred individual birds.
