The International Exhibition: marble statue - "Sardanapalus" (from Byron's Tragedy)... 1862. Creator: Unknown. The International Exhibition: marble statue - "Sardanapalus" (from Byron's Tragedy)... 1862. Creator: Unknown

The International Exhibition: marble statue - "Sardanapalus" (from Byron's Tragedy), by H. Weekes, A.R.A. 1862....one of the single-figure statues commissioned for the Egyptian Hall of the Mansion House...Mr. Weekes has wrought out the poet's conception very admirably in the animated, defiant attitude and the mixture of scornful and almost hilarious expression in the face...The technical merits of this statue are of a very high order, and place it among the best modern sculptures. The action of the upraised arm is given with great anatomical truth. When the arm is raised in this position the serrati muscles and the ridge of the false ribs with their cartilaginous attachments would be brought into unpleasant relief if not, as here, treated very judiciously. The difficult anatomy of the olecranion or elbow and the joint of the ulna and humerus in this position of the arm is also perfectly mastered. Throughout the figure there is that due discrimination between the hard, knobby markings of the osseous structures, the flatnesses of the tendinous portions, and the double curves of the muscles which Haydon so justly admired in the Elgin marbles. The drapery is also very skilfully "cast". From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
The International Exhibition: marble statue of Sardanapalus, from Byron's Tragedy, 1862, is an enigmatic and captivating work of art that continues to intrigue viewers with its haunting beauty and technical mastery. The creator of this magnificent sculpture remains unknown, but it is documented that it was commissioned for the Egyptian Hall of the Mansion House in London. Sardanapalus, a king from Byron's tragic play, is depicted in defiant and animated pose, with a scornful and almost hilarious expression on his face. The statue's technical merits are of the highest order, placing it among the finest modern sculptures of its time. The artist, H. Weekes, A.R.A., skillfully brought the poet's conception to life, paying close attention to the anatomical details of the figure. The upraised arm, a challenging position for a sculptor, is rendered with great anatomical truth. The serrati muscles and the ridge of the false ribs are delicately treated, avoiding any unpleasant relief. The difficult anatomy of the elbow and the joint of the ulna and humerus are also masterfully executed. Throughout the figure, there is a discerning balance between the hard, knobby markings of the osseous structures, the flatnesses of the tendinous portions, and the double curves of the muscles. This exquisite understanding of the human form harks back to the admiration of the Elgin marbles, as noted by the renowned sculptor Benjamin Robert Haydon. The drapery of the statue is also expertly cast, adding to the overall allure and mystery of this enchanting work of art.
