Examining a patients thorax using an X-ray tube and fluorescent screen, 1903
Examining a patients thorax using an X-ray tube and fluorescent screen, 1903. The X-ray tube (on tripod) is set at the required height and the patient stands directly in front of it. In front of the patient, the operator holds a specially coated paper screen. When X-rays fall on the paper, its coating fluoresces, leaving as shadows those dense portions of the thorax, such as bones, which absorb X-rays. Many who worked with X-rays in the early days suffered the effects of over-exposure to radiation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1903, where medical technology was in its infancy. In this image, we witness a doctor examining a patient's thorax using an X-ray tube and fluorescent screen. The X-ray tube is positioned on a tripod at the perfect height, while the patient stands directly in front of it. The operator holds up a specially coated paper screen in front of the patient. As X-rays pass through the body, their interaction with bones creates shadows on the paper screen due to their absorption properties. These shadows reveal dense portions of the thorax, providing valuable insights into the patient's health. However, as groundbreaking as this technology was at that time, little was known about its harmful effects. Many pioneers who worked closely with X-rays suffered from over-exposure to radiation without realizing its long-term consequences. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of how far medical science has come since then. It highlights both the dedication and risks taken by those early doctors who paved the way for modern diagnostic techniques. As we examine this historical snapshot today, we can appreciate how advancements in technology have revolutionized medicine and improved our understanding of human anatomy while emphasizing safety precautions that were once unknown or overlooked.
