Woolly mammoth hair, SEM

Woolly mammoth hair. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a preserved woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) hair. The woolly mammoth was a member of the elephant family, with long curved tusks and a covering of long hair. The coat consisted of long dark guard cells over a fine underwool. The woolly mammoth lived throughout the northern plains. It became extinct around 10, 000 years ago at the end of the last ice age, probably due to a combination of climate change, human hunting and disease. Several well preserved carcasses have been found frozen in Siberia and North America

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of woolly mammoth hair, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals the preserved hair of a woolly mammoth, an ancient member of the elephant family known for its long curved tusks and thick coat of fur. The woolly mammoth's coat consisted of long dark guard cells that provided protection against harsh weather conditions, covering a fine underwool. This unique adaptation allowed them to thrive in the frigid northern plains where they once roamed. However, their existence came to an end approximately 10,000 years ago during the last ice age. Various factors contributed to their extinction, including climate change as temperatures rose at the end of the ice age. Human hunting and disease also played significant roles in their demise. Despite this tragic fate, several well-preserved carcasses have been discovered frozen in Siberia and North America. This mesmerizing SEM image not only provides us with a glimpse into the biology and zoology of these magnificent creatures but also serves as a reminder of our planet's rich history and biodiversity. It is a testament to both scientific exploration and preservation efforts that allow us to study these extinct species today.
