Total eclipse of the Moon in December 1992

Lunar eclipse. Time-lapse image of a total eclipse of the Moon, a phenomenon caused when the Moon enters the shadow cast by the Earth. Even when totally shadowed the Moon does not generally disappear. It is still visible due to the sunlight refracted onto its surface by the Earths atmosphere. The colour of the lunar disc during an eclipse depends on the amount of dust and volcanic ash present in the atmosphere of the Earth. This is because these particles scatter blue light, making the sunlight appear red. Photographed on 9 December 1992 over Lewes in Delaware, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of a total eclipse of the Moon in December 1992. As the Moon enters the shadow cast by Earth, it undergoes a transformation that is both awe-inspiring and mysterious. Contrary to popular belief, even when fully engulfed in darkness, the lunar disc does not vanish completely from sight. The sunlight refracted onto its surface by Earth's atmosphere ensures that it remains visible throughout this celestial event. The color of the Moon during an eclipse varies depending on atmospheric conditions such as dust and volcanic ash present in Earth's atmosphere. These particles scatter blue light, causing sunlight to appear red and giving rise to stunning hues on our lunar neighbor. Photographed over Lewes in Delaware, USA on 9th December 1992, this time-lapse image showcases nature's grand spectacle unfolding before our eyes. It serves as a reminder of humanity's enduring fascination with space exploration and our quest to unravel the mysteries of our universe. With elements encompassing science, astronomy, cosmology, and planetary studies, this photograph offers a window into the wonders beyond our planet. Its ethereal beauty invites us to contemplate our place within the vastness of space while igniting curiosity about what lies beyond Earth's boundaries.
