Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Thomas Watson, telephone pioneer
Thomas A. Watson (1854-1934), US inventor and telephone pioneer. Watson is famous for being the assistant of Alexander Graham Bell, whom he helped to develop a practical and workable telephone. The first words that Bell spoke into his experimental telephone were " Mr Watson come here, I want to see you." The telephone worked, transmitting the words as electrical impulses along a wire to an earpiece that converted the impulses back to sound. Watson worked with Bell to develop their invention, and then left to develop other interests. These ranged from geology and fossil hunting, to ship building, the study of the human voice, and acting and other theatre work
