Framed Print of Particle interaction at CERN

Special effects zoom photograph of a particle interaction in the UA1 detector at CERN, the particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. The UA1 detector, which discovered the W and Z particles in 1983, records the collisions of protons and anti- protons accelerated to very high energy in CERNs SPS collider. When a proton and antiproton collide, they annihilate into pure energy which rematerial- ises as a large number of new particles that spray out in all directions. The photograph symbolises the explosive appearance of such interactions. The detector itself is outlined in red.
