Mountain gorilla and baby
Mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) cradling a young baby in its arms. Mountain gorillas are found in cloud forests high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire. The high elevation and rainfall makes this habitat wet and cold. The adults eat many kilograms of vegetation daily (roots, leaves and stems) and can reach over 2 metres in height. Infants stay with their mothers for 3 to 4 years. This slow reproductive rate has left mountain gorillas vulnerable to habitat destruction, poaching and war, making them highly endangered. Photographed in Virunga National Park, Rwanda

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the heartwarming bond between a majestic Mountain gorilla and her precious baby. The Mountain gorillas, known scientifically as Gorilla beringei beringei, inhabit the misty cloud forests that adorn the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes in Rwanda, Uganda, and Zaire. This habitat is characterized by its high elevation and abundant rainfall, creating a wet and chilly environment. Standing at over 2 meters tall, these gentle giants sustain themselves by consuming several kilograms of vegetation daily - roots, leaves, and stems. However, their slow reproductive rate has made them vulnerable to various threats such as habitat destruction caused by human activities, poaching incidents driven by illegal wildlife trade demands, and even war-induced conflicts. Photographed within the serene surroundings of Virunga National Park in Rwanda's lush landscapes; this image showcases not only the natural beauty but also highlights the critical conservation efforts required to protect these highly endangered creatures. The infant gorillas remain under their mother's nurturing care for three to four years before venturing out independently into their world. As we admire this remarkable scene captured with great detail by Science Photo Library; let us reflect on our responsibility towards preserving these magnificent animals' habitats and ensuring their survival for future generations. These mountain gorillas symbolize both Africa's rich biodiversity and its urgent need for protection against numerous challenges they face in today's world.
