The Geographer, 17th century artwork

The Geographer, 17th century artwork by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). This artwork was finished in 1669, and forms a pair with The Astronomer (V700/157), also by Vermeer. The original is in the Steadelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt, Germany. The two paintings depict the scientific revolution that was taking place in 17th-century Europe. In geography, increasingly accurate maps were being made. It is thought that van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) is the person used as the model for this painting. It shows a geographer holding a pair of dividers as he leans over a map. The terrestrial globe (upper centre) was made by Jodocus Hondius in 1600, and is a twin to the celestial globe in The Astronomer. At upper right, is part of a map of Europe. Vermeers signature is on the cupboard, below the globe and to the right of the geographers head

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Geographer" a remarkable 17th-century artwork by the renowned Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. Completed in 1669, this masterpiece is paired with another Vermeer creation called "The Astronomer". Both paintings beautifully depict the scientific revolution that unfolded during Europe's 17th century. In this particular artwork, we witness a geographer engrossed in his studies. The geographer delicately holds a pair of dividers as he leans over an intricately detailed map. Above him hangs a terrestrial globe crafted by Jodocus Hondius in 1600, perfectly complementing the celestial globe featured in "The Astronomer". Vermeer's attention to detail is evident throughout the painting, from the carefully rendered map of Europe at the upper right corner to his signature discreetly placed on the cupboard below the globe and to the right of the geographer's head. It is believed that Vermeer used van Leeuwenhoek as his model for this piece. This artwork not only captures a moment frozen in time but also symbolizes significant advancements made during this era—particularly in geography and cartography. "The Geographer" serves as an exquisite representation of Vermeer's mastery and stands as a testament to Europe's Age of Science. Housed at Steadelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt, Germany, it continues to inspire awe and appreciation for its historical significance and artistic brilliance.
