Eye retina

Structure of the retina. Computer artwork showing the structure of the eye retina. The retina is a thin tissue layer on the inner eye responsible for sight. Light strikes from the top. At top are nerve fibres which combine to form the optic nerve to the brain. Nerve fibres have round cell bodies with branching dendrites. At centre is a second layer of cell bodies which synapse with rods and cones (lower frame). Rods are long nerve cells which respond to dim light, enabling images to be detected. Cones are shorter cone-like cells which detect colour. Rods and cones pass visual signals through the optic nerve to the brain. At bottom, pigment cells block light from passing further

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of the eye retina, beautifully depicted through computer artwork. The retina, a delicate tissue layer located in the inner eye, plays a vital role in our ability to see. Illuminated from above by incoming light, this image reveals its fascinating composition. At the top of the retina, we observe nerve fibers that converge to form the optic nerve leading directly to the brain. These fibers possess round cell bodies adorned with branching dendrites, which facilitate communication between cells and transmit visual information. In the center of this mesmerizing artwork lies a second layer composed of cell bodies that synapse with rods and cones – two types of specialized cells crucial for vision. Rods are elongated nerve cells designed to respond sensitively even in low-light conditions, enabling us to detect images under dim illumination. On the other hand, cones are shorter cone-shaped cells responsible for perceiving colors accurately. The remarkable collaboration between rods and cones culminates as they transmit visual signals through the optic nerve towards our brain's processing centers. Finally, at the bottom portion of this illustration, pigment cells act as guardians by blocking excessive light from progressing further into our eyes. This extraordinary print not only highlights scientific accuracy but also serves as an artistic masterpiece capturing both beauty and complexity within our visual sense - an awe-inspiring reminder of how intricately woven human anatomy truly is.
