This artwork depicts the powerful action of antibiotics on Escherichia coli, a common bacterium. At the center of the image, we see an oval-shaped bacterial cell representing Escherichia coli. Inside this cell lies its nuclear material, coiled and colored in purple. However, due to the drug's intervention represented by a band at the upper right corner, chaos ensues. The antibiotic drugs showcased here include penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics – renowned for their efficacy in treating bacterial infections. As these drugs take effect on Escherichia coli, they cause it to burst open (lysis) dramatically. The rupture leads to the release of chromosome material containing DNA from within the bacterium.
