EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming photo print, we are transported back to August 1952, where John Shaw, a fruiterer from Walworth with an undeniable passion for horses, is captured in a heartwarming scene. Standing proudly beside him is his beloved pedigree Shetland piebald pony named Felbridge Flash. John had encountered a predicament when he would visit his local pub for a drink - the children there would playfully tease Flash. Determined to find a solution that would bring joy to both himself and the little ones, John came up with an ingenious idea. He decided to take Flash along with his cart into the public house itself. The Surrey Arms became witness to this delightful spectacle as Mrs. Hardman, the publican's wife, joined in on the fun by feeding Flash a biscuit. The image captures her kind gesture perfectly. Amidst laughter and camaraderie, we see John engaged in conversation over drinks with one of his friends. This small group of people exudes warmth and happiness as they enjoy each other's company alongside their four-legged companion. This photograph not only showcases John Shaw's love for horses but also highlights the humor and mixed age range found within traditional pubs during the 1950s. It serves as a nostalgic reminder of simpler times when animals were welcomed into establishments like family members.
