Duchess of Kent in a Wrens Uniform The Duchess of Kent helps a new recruit sign up

Duchess of Kent in a Wrens Uniform
The Duchess of Kent helps a new recruit sign up.
One of the important issues raised by the WW2 was the role of women. Like the Great War of 1914 - 1918 the government found that production could not keep up with demand and so women were encouraged to take up jobs to assist the war effort. Royal women were no exception and infact their willingness to take work on encouraged other women to do so. The Duchess of Kent joined the Wrens (part of the Royal Navy) and her relative Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II also joined up. In all 7 million women took part in the war effort, whether in uniform, or on a production line, in factories or on the land, manning guns or minting coins they were essential to Britains success and indeed survival

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing the Duchess of Kent dressed in a Wrens uniform as she assists a new recruit in signing up. The image symbolizes the crucial role women played during World War II and highlights the impact of royal figures actively participating in the war effort. During this tumultuous time, with production unable to meet demands, women were encouraged to step into various roles to support their country. The Duchess of Kent's decision to join the Wrens, alongside her relative Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II), served as an inspiration for countless other women who followed suit. In total, approximately 7 million women contributed to Britain's success and survival throughout the war. Whether they wore uniforms or worked on production lines, factories, farms, manned guns or minted coins – their efforts were indispensable. The photograph not only commemorates these brave women but also sheds light on an important chapter in history when gender norms were challenged and shattered. It serves as a reminder that every individual has a part to play during times of crisis and that unity is key for triumph over adversity. This remarkable image from Memory Lane Prints transports us back to an era where resilience and determination prevailed against all odds.
