EDITORS COMMENTS
by William Ellis is an exquisite watercolor illustration from the collection of sketches made during Captain James Cook's third voyage of exploration to the southern hemisphere, between the years 1776 and 1780. This remarkable artwork, created by the skilled hand of William Ellis (1728-1785), depicts a vibrant and intriguing underwater scene teeming with life. The illustration showcases a diverse array of striped fish, each one meticulously rendered in brilliant shades of brown and other colors, swimming in the crystal-clear waters of an unknown ocean. The artist's keen observation and attention to detail are evident in the way he has captured the unique textures and patterns of the fish's scales, as well as the subtle nuances of their forms and movements. This beautiful watercolor is a testament to the spirit of adventure and discovery that characterized the 18th century, a time when intrepid explorers like Captain Cook set sail in search of new lands and knowledge. The illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world as it was then known, and serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity that awaited European explorers as they ventured into uncharted waters. William Ellis, a skilled artist and draftsman, accompanied Cook on his third voyage as part of the expedition's scientific team. His watercolor sketches, like Plate 105, were an essential part of the expedition's record of discovery, providing valuable documentation of the natural history of the southern hemisphere. Today, they remain an invaluable resource for scholars and historians, offering insights into the natural world of the past and the incredible journey of discovery that was the third voyage of Captain James Cook.
