EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "George Cruikshank, The Bottle, Plate VI" takes us back to the year 1847 and sheds light on a significant social movement of that time - the Temperance Movement. Created by renowned English artist George Cruikshank, this etching is part of his powerful series called "The Bottle" aimed at exposing the perils of alcoholism. Plate VI depicts a scene filled with fear and brutality resulting from excessive drinking. The image portrays a domestic setting where an intense argument has erupted among family members. A drunken father stands in anger while engaging in a violent quarrel with his wife. Their children, visibly distressed and frightened, witness this dramatic struggle unfold before their eyes. Cruikshank's masterful use of etching brings forth the raw emotions experienced within this troubled household. Poverty looms over them as they grapple with the consequences brought about by alcohol abuse. This artwork serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive nature of alcohol addiction prevalent during that era in both America and Great Britain. It highlights not only the physical harm caused but also its detrimental impact on families and society as a whole. Sarin Images / The Granger Collection has preserved this historical gem for us to reflect upon our past struggles with alcoholism and appreciate how far we have come in addressing these issues through movements like temperance.
