EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage engraving from 1863 depicts a detailed map of the Battle of Belmont, a significant event in the American Civil War. Taking place on November 7,1861, in Mississippi County, Missouri, it marked Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's first combat test during the war. The image showcases the intricate cartography style of the 19th century and provides historical insight into this particular war event. The battle began when Grant sailed from Cairo, Illinois to attack the Confederate fortress at Columbus, Kentucky on November 6. However, he soon discovered that Confederate troops had crossed the Mississippi River to Belmont, Missouri. Landing his men on the Missouri side and marching towards Belmont, Grant's troops successfully overran and destroyed the Confederate camp. Despite their initial victory, scattered Confederate forces quickly regrouped and received reinforcements from Columbus. They launched a counterattack supported by heavy artillery fire across the river. In response to this fierce opposition, Grant retreated with his men back to their riverboats and transported them to Paducah in Kentucky. This antique print not only captures an important moment in history but also reflects traditional styles of illustration prevalent during that time period. It serves as a valuable document for understanding military strategies employed during this conflict between Union and Confederate forces.
