This vibrant and detailed print, titled "Asia noviter delineata, 1617" takes us on a visual journey through the diverse landscapes and cultures of Asia. Created by renowned Dutch cartographer Willem Blaeu in the early 17th century, this colour engraving showcases his mastery in mapmaking. The map presents an array of captivating elements that capture our attention. From the intricate coastlines to the numerous islands dotting the seas, every detail is meticulously depicted. As we explore further, we encounter majestic ships sailing across vast oceans and sea monsters lurking beneath them - a testament to the mythical beliefs prevalent during that era. But it's not just geography that captivates us; this print also offers glimpses into Asian societies at the time. Figures dressed in traditional male costumes from various countries are scattered throughout the map, providing insights into their unique cultures and identities. The Latin inscriptions accompanying each region add an air of authenticity to this historical piece.
