EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "Map of the coast of Sweden between Kalmar and Stockholm, 1580-83" takes us back in time to the 16th century. Created by Flemish artist Joannes van Doetecum, this artwork showcases his exceptional talent for cartography. The map depicts the picturesque coastline of Sweden, stretching from Kalmar to Stockholm. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring this maritime landscape to life. As we gaze upon it, we can almost feel the salty sea breeze and hear the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. Intriguingly devoid of human presence, this unpopulated scene allows us to appreciate nature's beauty in its purest form. The absence of people also highlights the vastness and untouched allure of this coastal region. A prominent feature on this map is a compass rose or wind rose—a symbol often used in cartography to indicate direction. It serves as a reminder that exploration and navigation were crucial during these times when sailing ships dominated transportation across Europe's seas. Van Doetecum's meticulous engravings capture every detail with precision—each ship, vessel, sailboat, and sailboat adds depth and character to this historical representation. This artwork not only serves as an important geographical reference but also stands as a testament to Van Doetecum's skillful craftsmanship. Preserved at Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam, Netherlands, this print offers us a glimpse into Sweden's past while showcasing Flemish artistry at its finest.
