Hand-colored copperplate engraving from a drawing by Johann Ihle from Ebenezer Sibly's "Universal System of Natural History" 1794.
The prolific Sibly published his Universal System of Natural History in 1794~1796 in five volumes covering the three natural worlds of fauna, flora and geology. The series included illustrations of mythical beasts such as the sukotyro and the mermaid, and depicted sloths sitting on the ground (instead of hanging from trees) and a domesticated female orang utan wearing a bandana. The engravings were by J. Pass, J. Chapman and Barlow copied from original drawings by famous natural history artists George Edwards, Albertus Seba, Maria Sybilla Merian, and Johann Ihle.); © Florilegius

Dressed in traditional animal skin attire and adorned with a beaded necklace, this man exudes strength and resilience as he carries a bow and arrow, ready for whatever challenges may come his way. This hand-colored copperplate engraving is part of Ebenezer Sibly's "Universal System of Natural History," a groundbreaking work that sought to document the diverse flora and fauna of the world. In this particular illustration, we see not only the physical characteristics of the Hottentot man but also the cultural significance of his attire and weaponry. The attention to detail in this print is truly remarkable, showcasing the skill and artistry of both Johann Ihle and the engravers who brought his vision to life. From the texture of the animal skin to the intricate patterns on the beaded necklace, every element has been carefully rendered with precision. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to an era when different cultures coexisted harmoniously with nature.
