Supernova remnant SN1006, composite image

Supernova remnant SN 1006. Combined X-ray, radio and optical image of the supernova remnant SN 1006, an expanding shell of gas and dust from the explosion of a massive star. The colours show the type of radiation being detected: X-ray data (blue) is from the Chandra X-ray Observatory; radio data (red) is from the NRAOs Very Large Array and Green Bank Telescope; optical data (yellow and orange) is from various ground-based telescopes. This combined study shows new details of the supernovas shockwave. SN 1006 is located in the constellation of Lupus and is around 7000 light years from Earth. The area seen here is around 112 light years across. This image was published in 2008
