Solar activity, SDO image C023 / 8088
Solar activity, SDO image. Coloured image of the surface of the Sun, showing one of an unusual series of eruptions that led to a series of fast puffs, which forced the slow ejection of a massive burst of solar plasma from the Suns corona (outermost atmosphere). The puffs occurred roughly once every three hours. After around 12 hours, a much larger eruption of material began. Data, including that used to create this image, enabled scientists to conclude that the source of the puffs was a series of energetic jets and related flares - localised catastrophic releases of energy that spew material out from the Sun, into space. Imaged by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in three wavelengths of light, on 17th January 2013

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing display of solar activity on the surface of the Sun. Taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) on January 17th, 2013, this colored image showcases an extraordinary series of eruptions that led to a sequence of fast puffs. These rapid bursts eventually culminated in the slow ejection of an immense burst of solar plasma from the Sun's corona. Scientists studying this phenomenon discovered that these puffs were caused by energetic jets and related flares - localized catastrophic releases of energy that forcefully expelled material into space. The occurrence of these puffs was observed approximately once every three hours before a much larger eruption took place after around 12 hours. The composite image, created using data collected by SDO in three different wavelengths of light, offers valuable insights into our understanding of solar dynamics and heliophysics. It provides astronomers and astrophysicists with crucial information about the behavior and mechanisms behind such eruptions within our stellar system. This stunning snapshot serves as a testament to humanity's continuous exploration and observation beyond Earth's boundaries. It reminds us how small we are in comparison to the vastness and power exhibited by celestial bodies like our radiant Sun.
