A distorted full Moon seen just above the horizon

The distorted disc of the full Moon seen just above the horizon. In this position the moonlight must pass through an increasing mass of air and the distortions caused by the refraction of light become significant. Such distortions reflect the presence of masses of air with different densities and temperatures and consequently refractivities. Another effect visible here is the reddening of the moonlight. This is caused by particulate matter such as dust and aerosols suspended in the atmosphere. These particles scatter blue light more strongly than red light making the lunar disc redder and the rest of the sky blue

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing sight - a distorted full Moon gracefully perched just above the horizon. As the Moon finds itself in this position, its ethereal glow must traverse an increasing mass of air, leading to significant distortions caused by the refraction of light. These distortions serve as a visual testament to the presence of various masses of air with differing densities and temperatures, each possessing unique refractive properties. Moreover, another fascinating phenomenon unfolds before our eyes within this image - the reddening of moonlight. Particulate matter such as dust and aerosols suspended in Earth's atmosphere contribute to this enchanting effect. These tiny particles possess an innate ability to scatter blue light more intensely than red light, resulting in a lunar disc that appears redder while simultaneously painting the rest of the sky with shades of serene blue. As we delve into this photograph from Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of humanity's profound fascination with celestial bodies but also how science unravels their mysteries. This image encapsulates elements from diverse fields such as astronomy, cosmology, and planetary science while showcasing one fundamental principle: light refraction. Let us marvel at this breathtaking snapshot that effortlessly merges artistry and scientific exploration into one harmonious composition.
