EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent piece of Liroconite, discovered in the historic Wheal Gorland mine located in St Day, Gwennap, Cornwall, England. Unearthed back in 1808, this large and exceptionally rare crystal measures an impressive 2.5cm - making it the largest known specimen of its kind worldwide. The crystal itself is composed of copper ore and exhibits a stunning transparent blue hue. Its unique structure takes the form of a double four-sided pyramid, adding to its allure and rarity. Collector Philip Rashleigh was so captivated by this extraordinary find that he included it as entry number 1114 in his mineral catalogue. Considered a type locality specimen for Liroconite, this particular crystal holds immense significance within the geological community. It serves as a testament to the rich mining history of Cornwall and stands as an emblematic representation of the region's abundant natural resources. Displayed here is just one snapshot from Royal Cornwall Museum's extensive collection; however, it undoubtedly encapsulates the beauty and scientific value found within these geological wonders. This photograph by MIke Searle invites viewers to marvel at nature's artistry while appreciating the historical importance preserved within each precious stone.
