EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Emanuel Swedenborg, a prominent Swedish philosopher, mystic, and cosmologist. Created in 1884 by artist W Holl, the portrait beautifully captures the essence of this remarkable figure from the 18th century. Swedenborg's intellectual pursuits were vast and varied. He delved into subjects such as algebra, navigation, astronomy, and chemistry. In 1734, he published his renowned work "Opera philosophica et mineralia" which explored the creation of the world through his unique interpretations of metallurgy and metaphysics. What set Swedenborg apart was his belief that he could communicate with the spirit world through vivid dreams. These experiences deeply influenced his philosophical ideas and spiritual teachings. In fact, his followers went on to establish the Church of the New Jerusalem in 1787. The image portrays Swedenborg with an air of wisdom and introspection. His distinctive wig adds a touch of elegance to his appearance while emphasizing the fashion trends prevalent during that era. W Holl skillfully captured not only Swedenborg's physical features but also conveyed a sense of depth behind those piercing eyes—a glimpse into a mind constantly exploring new frontiers in philosophy and science. This print serves as a timeless tribute to Emanuel Swedenborg's significant contributions to our understanding of both earthly matters like mathematics and celestial realms beyond our comprehension.
