by Byzantine, (5th century); w:2.25 wt:4.5 grams cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: The vast number of surviving Byzantine coins attests to the level of trade across the empire. Controlled and supervised by the emperor, the producers of coins took care to represent his authority and reflect his stature. Talented artists were recruited to engrave the dies (molds) used for the striking of coins. Emperors increasingly came to include their heirs and co-emperors on their coinage, as well as other family members or even earlier rulers. Coins were recognized, then as now, as small, portable works of art. With their inscriptions and images, Byzantine coins provide valuable documentation of historical events and a record of the physical appearance of the emperors. The coins shown here include the solidus, the basic gold coin of 24 karats; the tremissis, a gold coin of one-third the weight and value of the solidus; and the nomisma, which in the 10th century replaced the solidus as the standard gold coin.); Gift of William Mathewson Milliken, in memory of his father Thomas Kennedy Milliken; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Solidus of Theodosius II and Valentinian III, minted between 408-425 in gold. Housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this exquisite Byzantine coin is a testament to the extensive trade that flourished within the empire during its time. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, these coins were carefully designed to reflect the authority and stature of the emperor. The engraving on these coins was entrusted to skilled artists who created intricate molds for striking them. Emperors began including their heirs, co-emperors, family members, and even previous rulers on their coinage as a means of asserting their power and lineage. These small yet portable works of art served not only as currency but also as valuable historical documentation. In addition to providing insight into significant events from history, Byzantine coins offer glimpses into the physical appearance of emperors through inscriptions and images. The collection depicted here includes various types of gold coins such as the solidus – a 24-karat basic gold coin; tremissis – one-third in weight and value compared to solidus; and nomisma – which replaced solidus as the standard gold coin in later centuries. This particular photograph captures every intricate detail with precision thanks to photographer Gary Kirchenbauer's skillful composition. It serves as a reminder that beyond their monetary value, Byzantine coins are truly remarkable pieces of artistry that continue to captivate viewers today.
