Solidus of Justinian I (reverse), 545-565 (gold) (see CVL 499738 for obverse)

499739 Solidus of Justinian I (reverse), 545-565 (gold) (see CVL 499738 for obverse) by Byzantine School, (6th century); w:1.95 wt:4.5 grams cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: The vast number of surviving Byzantine coins attests to the level of trade across the empire. Controlled and supervised by the emperor, the producers of coins took care to represent his authority and reflect his stature. Talented artists were recruited to engrave the dies (molds) used for the striking of coins. Emperors increasingly came to include their heirs and co-emperors on their coinage, as well as other family members or even earlier rulers. Coins were recognized, then as now, as small, portable works of art. With their inscriptions and images, Byzantine coins provide valuable documentation of historical events and a record of the physical appearance of the emperors. The coins shown here include the solidus, the basic gold coin of 24 karats; the tremissis, a gold coin of one-third the weight and value of the solidus; and the nomisma, which in the 10th century replaced the solidus as the standard gold coin.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the reverse side of a Solidus coin from the Byzantine era, specifically during the reign of Justinian I between 545-565. Crafted in gold and weighing 4.5 grams, this exquisite piece is housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The vast number of surviving Byzantine coins speaks to the extensive trade network that existed within the empire. Produced under strict supervision by the emperor himself, these coins were meticulously designed to reflect his authority and stature. Skilled artists were recruited to engrave intricate molds used for striking these small yet portable works of art. Emperors began including their heirs, co-emperors, family members, and even previous rulers on their coinage as a means of showcasing lineage and succession. These coins not only served as currency but also provided valuable documentation of historical events and preserved physical depictions of emperors throughout history. The featured collection includes various types such as solidus (the standard gold coin), tremissis (a smaller gold coin worth one-third its weight), and nomisma (which replaced solidus as the standard gold coin in later centuries). This stunning photograph captures not just an ancient artifact but also a testament to the rich cultural heritage and artistic prowess that thrived during Byzantine times.
