EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a powerful moment in history as two soldiers fire downwards over sandbags. The intensity of the scene is palpable, with the soldiers fully engrossed in their duty to defend. Inscribed "A to face so as to get full profile" this image showcases the meticulous attention to detail and accuracy that Lady Elizabeth Butler brought to her artwork. Created in 1879, this pencil sketch by Lady Butler is one of her preparatory sketches for her renowned oil painting, "The Defence of Rorke's Drift". In this particular piece, she depicts soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 24th (The 2nd Warwickshire) Regiment who had valiantly fought at Rorke's Drift earlier that year.
