EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in time - the North West Mounted Police at Chelsea Barracks during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 1897. Taken by an unknown photographer, this image showcases the grandeur and significance of the event. The Diamond Jubilee marked Queen Victoria's 60th year on the throne, and London was abuzz with excitement. The Grand Royal Procession took place on June 22nd, attracting crowds from far and wide. Amongst the participants were members of the North West Mounted Police from Canada. Formed in 1873, this contingent proudly wears their distinctive Stetson headwear, symbolizing their role as mounted police officers. Their bandoliers slung across their chests carry ammunition for their Winchester repeating carbines, highlighting their dedication to maintaining law and order. Not only did they participate in ceremonial events such as the Changing of the Guard ceremony, but they also played a crucial role in upholding peace within communities back home in Canada. Interestingly enough, over a century later on May 23rd, 2012, Queen Elizabeth II invited her own Royal Canadian Mounted Police to undertake similar duties for her own Diamond Jubilee celebration. This photograph serves as a testament to both history and tradition while honoring those who have dedicated themselves to serving and protecting others.
