EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The black-bellied green Hummingbird, 1749-73" showcases the exquisite beauty of nature's tiniest marvels. Created by George Edwards and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print is a fusion of two remarkable works in natural history. The image depicts a male and female black-bellied green hummingbird with their distinct emerald plumage shimmering against a backdrop of vibrant foliage. The delicate details captured in this artwork highlight the precision and skill of both artists involved. Originally featured in George Edwards' A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History, Seligmann breathed new life into these plates by combining them with Catesby's A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. With his German translation and addition of unique figures and plants absent from the originals, Seligmann added an extra layer to this already extraordinary piece. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported to a world where nature's wonders unfold before our eyes. The intricate engravings bring forth not only the visual splendor but also evoke curiosity about these fascinating creatures that grace our planet. "The black-bellied green Hummingbird" serves as a testament to the timeless allure found within art inspired by nature. It reminds us to appreciate the diversity and magnificence present in every corner of our natural world – even within its smallest inhabitants.
