During the medieval period, chasses like this one were placed on church altars during high feast days to allow the faithful to venerate their sacred contents. The chasses design and imagery follow a common formula with Christs Crucifixion and Majesty decorating the central fields of its principal face. The back consists of two panels with identical decoration. Each features three busts of angels inscribed in medallions. Of the chasses lateral sides, only one is preserved in its original state, decorated with the figure of an imposing angel emerging from a bank of clouds. Here, the dark blue enamel background shows an even greater variety of rosettes and other decorative motifs, all engraved, stippled, and gilded like the ones on the other sides

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning medieval chasse, dating back to the 13th century. The chasse, crafted by the French School in the 14th century, is made of copper and adorned with intricate details. Standing at a height of 24.70 cm and width of 24.20 cm, this shrine-like container features repousse, engraved, stippled, and gilded designs. During its time, chasses like this one were placed on church altars during important religious celebrations for worshippers to venerate sacred relics contained within them. This particular chasse follows a common formula in its design and imagery; Christ's Crucifixion and Majesty grace the central fields of its principal face. The back panels are equally ornate with three busts of angels inscribed in medallions on each panel. One lateral side remains intact with an impressive angel emerging from clouds against a dark blue enamel background adorned with various rosettes and decorative motifs. This remarkable piece was generously gifted to the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio by S. Livingstone Mather, Constance Mather Bishop, Philip R. Mather, Katherine Hoyt Cross, and Katherine Mather McLean as per Samuel Mather's wishes. Through this print captured by Bridgeman Images' lens, we can marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship that went into creating such an extraordinary artifact from centuries past.
