Parasitic wasp, SEM
Parasitic wasp. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a parasitic wasp (Eretmocerus eremicus). This tiny wasp is a parasite of Bemisia sp. whitefly. Its compound eyes (grey) can be seen either side of its head (centre) and its large antennae (top) protrude from between the eyes. E. eremicus is a parasitoid, a parasite that always kills its host. Females lay their eggs in the whiteflys body and when the larvae hatch they feed on it from the inside out. E. eremicus is used as a biological control agent for whitefly. Magnification: x130 when printed at 10 centimetres wide
