Gill in Cape Observatory study. Scottish astronomer David Gill (1843-1914, centre) in his study at the Cape Observatory, South Africa. Gill was appointed Her Majestys Astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope in 1879, serving in this post until his retirement in 1906. Work carried out here included equipping the observatory with improved equipment, and measuring the parallax of nearby stars and planets. He improved the use of the heliometer, and pioneered astrophotography. He also worked on star atlases, including Cape Photographic Durchmusterung and Carte du Ciel.
