Canvas Prints from Science Photo Library
Archaeoglobus bacteria
Thermophilic bacteria. False colour light micrograph of the thermophilic bacteria Archaeoglobus fulgidus. This organism occurs in hot sediments near submarine hydrothermal vents, and has optimal function at an ambient temperature of 83 Celsius. Unlike other genera of thermophilic (high temperature liking) bacteria, A.fulgidus is able to reduce sulphates for anaerobic growth; the other genera all reduce elemental sulphur. A.fulgidus has been identified as a metabolic bridge between the rest of the extreme thermophilic genera and the methanogenic bacteria. Magnification x10, 000 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Archaeoglobus bacteria, a type of thermophilic bacteria that thrives in extreme heat. The false color light micrograph reveals the intricate details of this organism, which can be found in hot sediments near submarine hydrothermal vents. What makes Archaeoglobus fulgidus unique is its ability to reduce sulphates for anaerobic growth, unlike other genera of thermophilic bacteria that reduce elemental sulphur. Operating optimally at an ambient temperature of 83 Celsius, A. fulgidus acts as a metabolic bridge between other extreme thermophilic genera and methanogenic bacteria. Its discovery has shed light on the complex relationships within microbial communities thriving in such harsh environments. Magnified at x10,000 and printed at a size of 6x4.5cm, this rounded and colored image captures the essence of these heat-loving microbes. With its vibrant hues and circular shape, it serves as a reminder of the diverse world that exists beneath our feet. Bacteriology enthusiasts and microbiologists alike will appreciate this stunning portrayal of extremophile archaea. It offers a glimpse into their fascinating biology while highlighting their importance in understanding life's adaptability to even the most inhospitable conditions.
