Antique Framed Print : False-colour SEM of cell structure of liver lobule
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
False-colour SEM of cell structure of liver lobule
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the cell structure within a lobule of the liver. Hepatic cells (brown) surround sinusoid channels (blue at right, and centre) in a three-dimensional network. Blood cells (red) flow through these sinusoids to link up to a central vein. In this process of blood flow, liver cells are specialized to clean the blood of microorganisms, toxins, and waste. Bile thus formed by liver cells is released into tiny bile capillaries (cholangioles, green). Bile then enters the gall bladder to be used for digestive purposes. The liver also synthesizes Vitamin A. Magnification: x1, 550 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x2, 470 at 4x5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This false-colour SEM print showcases the intricate cell structure of a liver lobule, offering a mesmerizing glimpse into the hidden world within our bodies. The brown hue represents hepatic cells enveloping the lobule, while sinusoid channels are depicted in striking shades of blue at both right and center. These channels serve as vital conduits for red blood cells (depicted in vibrant red) to flow through, ultimately connecting to a central vein. In this remarkable process of blood circulation, liver cells exhibit their specialized function by diligently cleansing the blood of harmful microorganisms, toxins, and waste materials. Meanwhile, bile – an essential component for digestion – is meticulously produced by these liver cells and released into tiny bile capillaries known as cholangioles (depicted in vivid green). Subsequently, this precious bile finds its way into the gall bladder where it awaits its role in aiding digestion. Beyond its indispensable role in detoxification and digestive processes, the liver also plays a crucial part in synthesizing Vitamin A – an essential nutrient for various bodily functions. With magnifications reaching x1,550 at 6x7cm size or x2,470 at 4x5 inch size; this image allows us to appreciate the complexity and beauty inherent within our own anatomy. This awe-inspiring photograph from Science Photo Library serves as a testament to human ingenuity and scientific exploration while providing valuable insights into one of our body's most vital organs - the liver.
