EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the bustling activity of Mash & Austin Ltd.'s watercress lorries in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, during the 1930s. The scene showcases a collection of lorries and vans, adorned with the distinctive Mash & Austin Ltd. logo, parked outside the company's warehouses. These vehicles were an essential part of the watercress supply chain, transporting the fresh produce from the fields of Chesham to Covent Garden Market in London. The workers and drivers, dressed in their uniforms, can be seen loading the lorries with baskets of watercress, their faces expressing a sense of purpose and determination. The lorries, with their sturdy frames and large cargo areas, were well-suited to the demanding task of delivering perishable goods over long distances. The transportation of watercress was a significant industry in Chesham, with the town earning the nickname 'Watercress Capital of the World'. The cool, clear waters of the River Chess provided the ideal growing conditions for the delicate plant, making it a popular choice for London markets. Mash & Austin Ltd. was a leading supplier of watercress to Covent Garden Market, and their fleet of lorries played a crucial role in ensuring that the freshest produce reached consumers in the capital. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a window into the agricultural, transportation, and logistical processes that underpinned the supply of fresh produce during the 1930s.
