EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Smeatons Tower near Plymouth in Devon. Completed in 1759 by the ingenious John Smeaton, this tower served as the fourth Eddystone Lighthouse. Its remarkable interlocking granite block construction proved to be far more durable than its predecessors, standing tall against the relentless forces of nature. For an impressive 123 years, this magnificent structure guided countless ships safely along the treacherous coast. However, when cracks began to appear in the rock beneath it, a difficult decision was made to replace it with a new lighthouse. But rather than fading into obscurity, Smeatons Tower was carefully dismantled and rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe. The monochrome image captures not only the architectural brilliance of this historic landmark but also highlights its picturesque coastal setting. The rugged cliffs and crashing waves serve as a reminder of both the beauty and danger that sailors faced during their journeys. Preserved through time on a glass plate negative from the 19th century, this print holds immense historical value. It allows us to appreciate John Smeaton's engineering prowess while offering glimpses into maritime navigation practices of yesteryears. As we gaze upon this evocative photograph, we are transported back to an era where lighthouses stood as beacons of hope amidst turbulent seas - guiding ships home safely while leaving an indelible mark on our collective heritage.
