EDITORS COMMENTS
This close-up print from Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum takes us back to the 16th century, offering a glimpse into the New World. The vibrant colors of yellow and green bring life to this antique map, showcasing the vast continent of America. Published in Flanders in 1570, this Latin text publication holds historical significance as one of the earliest atlases ever created. The intricate lettering and detailed navigation lines demonstrate Ortelius' meticulous craftsmanship. As we examine this piece closely, we can almost imagine sailing through uncharted waters, discovering new lands that would eventually become part of the United States of America. Featured in a 1936 edition of The Connoisseur magazine edited by H. Granville Fell, this print has stood the test of time and continues to captivate audiences today. Its presence evokes a sense of wonderment about our world's past and how far we have come since then. As we appreciate this remarkable work by Ortelius, it serves as a reminder not only of our country's rich history but also its connection to Europe during the 16th century. This print is more than just an artistic representation; it is a window into an era when exploration was at its peak and boundaries were being pushed.
