EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a vintage print of the Sahara Desert in North Africa, specifically the Oued Rhir region and the oasis towns of Touggourt and Ouargia in Algeria. The photograph, titled "Le bas Sahara-Les Oasis, Oued Rhir; Afrique du nord," was published in the renowned French geographical magazine "Grande Geographie Bong Illustree" in 1914. Although the creator remains unknown, the intricate detail and accuracy of the map engraving suggest the work of a skilled cartographer or mapmaker. The print showcases the stark beauty of the Sahara Desert, with its vast expanse of sand dunes and rocky terrain, interspersed with the lush, green oases that sustain life in this arid climate. The wadi, or seasonal riverbed, is clearly marked, highlighting the importance of water sources in this desert environment. The print offers a glimpse into the early 20th century exploration and mapping of North Africa by European powers, particularly France, which controlled Algeria at the time. The intricate detail and colorful representation of the geographical features in the print reflect the growing interest in cartography and the desire to understand and document the world around them. Despite the passage of time, this print remains an enduring testament to the allure and mystery of the Sahara Desert and the rich history of North Africa. Its intricate detail and historical significance make it a valuable addition to any collection of vintage maps or Africana.
