EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Drying Cacao, Trinidad, B. W. I. early 20th century" offers a glimpse into the rich history of cocoa production in Trinidad and Tobago. The image showcases a group of unidentified workers engaged in the laborious process of drying cacao beans under the tropical sun. Cacao, also known as cocoa, has played a pivotal role in shaping the socio-economic landscape of this Caribbean nation for more than two centuries. Introduced by the Spanish in 1525, the Criollo variety became an integral part of Trinidad's agricultural industry. This photograph provides a visual testament to the enduring legacy left by those early planters. The vibrant colors captured through hand tinting add depth and vitality to this snapshot from yesteryears. As we admire this postcard-like print, it is impossible not to marvel at both the beauty and hard work depicted within its frame. These unknown individuals represent countless others who contributed tirelessly to establish Trinidad as one of the leading players in the chocolate industry during that time. Let us cherish this historical artifact as a reminder of how agriculture shaped communities and economies throughout our past.
